Vero Beach

Day 258, April 28th, 2010

Let go the buoy at 0700 just as the sun was rising. Through the Roosevelt Bridge and headed down the St. Lucie River. Hadn't gone 10 minutes when we went aground! And just as we felt it a big motor boat went by and his wake seemed to drive us on further. We were still in the channel but there must have been some shoaling along the edge there! Luckily a soft muddy stop but we seemed well and truly stuck. We checked the tide table and sure enough High Tide was at 7:10 and it was then 7:23!!! John called Boat US to pull us off and the guy told us he would send somebody along in half an hour. A miserable wait!!! A few small motor boats drove by but no change. Then, after about 20 minutes, these two big motor boats came whizzing by, without reducing speed at all. John shoved the engine full forward and she caught the high water with the wakes and jumped off!! Oh, we were so relieved. What a beginning to our homeward journey!!!

The rest of the day was pretty good and we just tootled up the waterway to Vero Beach City Marina. En route our cell phone rang and we chatted with Paul andSue Butcher - they were in Vero Beach already and we'd see them when we got there!!

Vero Beach hasn't changed at all since we were there 4 years ago. John took care of getting some gas for the outboard while I walked up to the Post Office and mailed a letter. I couldn't resist a short walk on the beach and paddle in the ocean. When I got back we ran into Paul and Sue and joined them for a drink on dear old Twice 's Nice!! Good times! Got up to date with our winter exploits!
